The central challenges of our time - armed conflicts and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the disintegration of the environment and climate change, poverty and human rights abuses - require global solutions. Germany believes that the UN is indispensable in addressing these global problems.
Among all international organizations, the United Nations is the only global forum with universal membership. This confers a unique political legitimacy and makes the United Nations a decisive player in the implementation and further development of common values and norms which guide relations among states and other international actors. As a forum for multilateral negotiation, a catalyst of global solutions and a force for peace, development and human rights in many of the world's conflicts, the United Nations stands at the juncture of the most critical and complex issues the world is confronting today.
The United Nations is therefore a key pillar of German foreign policy. This is reflected in our long-standing commitment and substantive contributions to the work of the organisation - as the third-largest contributor to the UN budget, as a contributor to international peacekeeping or as an important donor to the Uniteds Nations' funds and programs.
