2010 was a year of unprecedented humanitarian mega-crises: OCHA and the humanitarian community were challenged in a way the world has never seen before. Also OCHA was stretched to the limit and had to prove its capacities to coordinate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to millions of people. With effect from 5 January 2011, Germany assumed the chair of two important bodies of the United Nations Security Council: the Security Council Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict and the Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee. In addition, Germany will be the Security Council’s lead coordinator on Afghanistan.
