Foreign Minister Westerwelle welcomes UN sanctions against Libyan leadership
During last night the UN Security Council unanimously voted to impose comprehensive sanctions on the Libyan leadership around Muammar Gaddafi. These include an asset freeze and travel bans. In addition, an arms embargo was imposed and it was decided to refer the ongoing violent repression of civilian demonstrators to the International Criminal Court. The Security Council was responding to the continuing massive attacks by the Libyan leadership against its own people.
In this connection Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle (27 February) issued the following statement:
“I welcome the UN Security Council’s unanimous resolution, brought about with German support. It is the hoped-for clear response from the international community to the brutality of the Libyan leadership. The referral to the International Criminal Court shows that anyone who commits crimes against his own people will personally be called to account.”
