Remarks by Ambassador Wittig to the UN Press Corps on Libya
Remarks on Libya to the UN Press Corps by Ambassador Wittig after today's Security Council consultations:
We welcomed the appointment of Mr Al Khatib as envoy for Libya by the Secretary-General. He was encouraged to take up his mission soon and have contacts to various segments of the Libyan society. That was very much welcome.
The situation was a cause of concern, the deteriorating situation. Almost everybody expressed concern.
As far as we are concerned we want the Council to be active on Libya and we want it to consider further sanctions, to target sanctions better and to make them stronger, to put additional pressure on the Gadaffi regime. And that was on our mind and I think that was echoed by some others. And there were also discussions of measures going beyond that but we are at an early stage.
