Foreign Minister Westerwelle extremely concerned as situation in Yemen escalates

Mar 25, 2011

The situation in Yemen is continuing to worsen. President Saleh has declared a state of emergency and dismissed his cabinet, the political and military leadership is increasingly fragmented, and the lines drawn between the President’s supporters and his opponents have been cemented yet further. More demonstrations have been announced for today.

Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement in Berlin yesterday:

“I have been watching developments in Yemen with the gravest concern. This conflict cannot be resolved by violence. President Saleh has a duty to protect the people of Yemen. The security forces are called upon to exercise the greatest possible restraint. The country’s future needs to be determined by peaceful dialogue within society and bold reforms. That will involve organizing an orderly political transition.”

The Federal Foreign Office summoned Mohammed Lutf Al-Eryani, the Yemeni Ambassador in Berlin, to a meeting yesterday afternoon.
