Foreign Minister Westerwelle deeply appalled by the death of UN personnel in Afghanistan
On the violent attack on the office of the UN mission (UNAMA) in Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle declared today in Beijing:
"I am deeply appalled by the violent attacks on the UNAMA-office in Mazar-e-Sharif where, according to our information at least six UN-staff members were killed and more wounded.
We grieve for the dead and our thoughts are with their families, for whom the mission in Afghanistan took the highest toll.
In the name of the German Federal Government I would like to convey my deepest sympathies to the Secretary General of the United Nations. The United Nations stand for the global community. Under no circumstances may their personnel or institutions be subjected to violent conflict.
It seems that the burning of the Koran triggered the violence. The Federal Government, as well as the United Nations, the European Union, NATO and all our partners, oppose any desecration of religious symbols."
