Remarks to the UN press corps by Ambassador Wittig after today's Security Council consultations on Côte d'Ivoire:

Apr 11, 2011

"It is very good news that he [Ggagbo] surrendered.  It is good that he is safe and unharmed, being protected.

Now of course the utmost priority is to restore security and safety in Abidjan, in Côte d'Ivoire. [inaudible] And then, looking ahead: political reconciliation. We trust that Outtara will begin a process of inclusive political integration of all the segments of the Ivorian society. AU and ECOWAS might be helpful in that political process.

In the medium term accountability is important. Accountability of those who perpetrated crimes - of the two camps. That's the cornerstone for a long term reconciliation."
