Human Rights Commissioner on fifty years since the founding of Amnesty International

May 27, 2011

Markus Löning, Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office, yesterday (26 May) issued the following statement to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Amnesty International, which falls on 28 May:

“Many people all over the world owe their freedom and their lives to the commitment and work of Amnesty International. I should like particularly to thank the many voluntary workers who have contributed to the capacity of Amnesty International as a highly informed and vital network to make a real difference. Through their work they also help shape political decisions and support people all over the world who are suffering as a result of human rights violations.

People across the world need Amnesty International today no less than they did on the day the organization was founded. The successful work of Amnesty International is vital to everyone!“
