Message from Foreign Minister Westerwelle on the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast (Eid ul Fitr) at the end of Ramadan
Message from Federal Foreign Minister Dr Guido Westerwelle on the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast (Eid ul Fitr) at the end of Ramadan on 30 August 2011
I wish a blessed Eid ul Fitr to all people of the Islamic faith.
Ramadan is not only a month of reflection and contemplation, but also promotes sympathy for the well-being of other peoples and cultures.
This year my thoughts are especially with the young Muslims whose Ramadan is overshadowed by political uncertainty or even violence.
The upheavals of 2011 in many countries in the Arab region have shown the world that people’s aspiration to freedom and democracy cannot be suppressed forever.
Where there has already been a political change, I very strongly hope that political stability and the rule of law can be established through peaceful dialogue, so that all people can go about their daily lives and celebrate their festivals together in peace and happiness.
Peace, solidarity, and understanding are the foundations of Ramadan. They are the pillars of a good life together for all people and together we want to continue to cultivate and expand these values as we strive for peace all over the world.
A blessed and peaceful Eid ul Fitr to all!
Dr Guido Westerwelle
Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs
