Review Conference on Small Arms and Light Weapons: Meeting in the German Mission with UNODA and the Group of Interested States on practical disarmament measures (GIS)
Along the sidelines of the current review conference on small arms and light weapons the German Mission and the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) hosted a meeting in the GIS-framework (Group of Interested States on practical disarmament measures) on 28 August 2012. The meeting brought together recipient countries, donors, implementing agencies and NGOs with a particular focus on both Sudans.
Small arms experts including the heads of the Small Arms Authorities in Khartoum and Juba, the Geneva based Small Arms Survey as well as the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) shared their experience in implementing small arms control under difficult circumstances.
A vivid exchange of views illustrated that much remains to be done in order to combat illegal arms flows. Yet, participants' contributions also offered practical tools - i.e. an online guide for the identification and classification of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the field – and best practices on how these challenges could be addressed.
The discussion highlighted once more the need to further intensify common efforts in order to reach a substantial outcome document of the 2012 review conference.
