Aug 22, 2013

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle calls the reports according to which numerous people have been killed by a poison gas attack in Syria alarming and demands an urgent investigation. The UN commission to investigate the use of chemical weapons in Syria arrived in the country on Sunday. Germany welcomes the mission, but calls for the commission to be granted comprehensive and unhindered access.

Against the backdrop of the current allegations, Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement on the sidelines of the EU Foreign Ministers Meeting in Brussels:

"These are very serious and alarming allegations which must be investigated urgently. We demand that the UN chemical weapons experts currently in Syria be given the opportunity to carry out a complete investigation immediately."
