Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI) Joint Statement on North Korea
The Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI) condemns in the strongest terms the repeated nuclear tests and ballistic missile launches conducted by North Korea, including the nuclear test conducted on September 3 and two ballistic missile launches on August 29 and September 15 respectively that flew over Japan, in flagrant violation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and DPRK’s other international commitments.
The rapid development of North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes poses an unprecedented, grave and imminent threat to the peace and security of both the region and the broader international community. These activities are clear violations of relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and present a direct challenge to the international non-proliferation and disarmament regime, centered on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
The NPDI strongly urges North Korea to immediately cease its nuclear and ballistic missile related activities, to refrain from conducting further destabilizing and provocative actions, and to abandon all nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles programmes in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.
The NPDI strongly urges North Korea also to fully comply with its obligations under all relevant UN Security Council resolutions, to fulfil its commitments under the Six-Party Talks, and to return at an early date to the NPT and to its adherence with its International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards agreement.
The NPDI calls on the international community to fulfill their obligations to rigorously and fully implement all relevant UN Security Council resolutions, in order to maximize pressure on North Korea.
The NPDI urges North Korea to immediately change its errant course and to open the way for diplomatic efforts to address and resolve international concerns about its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.
Today’s Ministerial Meeting is a timely occasion for the NPDI to reiterate its commitment to further strengthen the international framework for disarmament and the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and to explore further collaboration, in keeping with relevant UN Security Council Resolutions, to address subsequent North Korean provocations.
