Statement by Ambassador Wittig at the 1st Regular Session of the Executive Board of UN Women

Jan 24, 2011

Dear Ms. Bachelet, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you once again on the appointment as USG and Executive Director of UN Women.

Germany has always been a strong supporter of the work of the United Nations in the areas of gender equality and the empowerment of women.  And we will continue to do so.

We are therefore extremely pleased to witness the creation of UN Women under your able leadership and look forward to a close cooperation with you and your team.

You and your team have done a very good job over the last months in setting up the organizations, yet we are only at the very beginning of a long and hopefully successful process.

The creation of UN Women has sent a powerful signal, in that it showed the world that the United Nations is going to strengthen its focus and work on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The new entity combines normative functions and operational activities in a unique manner.

We expect UN Women to become a strong and visionary leader at the global level to advance the discussions on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

At the same time we expect that the establishment of UN Women will help to deliver more and better results on the ground.

We furthermore look forward to UN Women, through its operational activities, becoming a fully integrated member of the UN development system and a beacon for the success of the efforts to improve system-wide coherence.

Germany fully supports the priority areas as outlined by you, Ms. Bachelet. We agree that these are indeed the most pressing needs and that they should become the areas around which UN Women organizes its work.

We are looking forward to actively engage in the dialogue leading up to the formulation of the strategic plan of UN Women. UN Women will be identified by, and measured against, the goals set out in this plan.

We are pleased and encouraged by the open and constructive atmosphere which has characterized this Executive Board from its first informal session on, and we would like to thank you for the transparent and inclusive manner in which you are planning to take this process forward.
