Remarks to the press by Ambassador Wittig on Kosovo

Jul 28, 2011

(near verbatim)

The Council agreed yesterday on having a briefing by the Secretariat on the latest developments in Serbia and Kosovo.

The German government is very concerned about the recent spate of violence. Of course, we call on all sides to cease hostilities immediately.

We have to de-escalate the situation. This has to be done in close co-ordination with the international presences on the ground, mainly KFOR, the NATO-force, and EULEX, the European Mission.

The conflict has to be addressed in the framework of a dialogue that is ongoing under the auspices of the EU. And that is the forum that is the most appropriate body to address the underlying issues that have caused this spate of violence. So parties should return to the dialogue under the auspices of the EU.
